What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use observations, data, and diagrams to trace energy through a defined system. They identify each energy form and explain where the energy goes, including thermal energy and sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label energy forms before, during, and after an event. They use evidence to argue that the total amount stays constant, even when some energy spreads into the surroundings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say energy is used up or disappears when motion stops. They may treat heat and temperature as the same thing or overlook sound and thermal energy. They may also confuse energy transfer with energy transformation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A battery-powered fan runs for two minutes and becomes warm. Draw the energy changes and explain why no energy disappeared.
