What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the energy forms entering and leaving a system. They make a claim about the transformations, then support it with observations and scientific reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students trace energy through a device or event using labeled arrows. They explain that energy changes form rather than appearing, disappearing, or being used up.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse energy transformation with energy transfer between objects. They may name only the most visible output, such as light, and overlook thermal or sound energy.
How to Assess It
- Show a diagram of a battery-powered flashlight and ask: What energy transformations occur, and what evidence supports your answer?
