What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals using methods they choose. They use models, written steps, and estimates to explain and check their calculations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects an efficient method and finds correct sums, differences, products, and quotients. They connect written work to a place-value or area model. They use estimation to catch unreasonable answers.

Common Misconceptions

Students often line up the last digits instead of decimal points when adding or subtracting. They may guess where to place the decimal in a product, or change only the divisor when dividing. Some think 3.5 and 3.50 have different values.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A cyclist travels 18.72 miles in 2.4 hours. Find the average miles per hour, show your strategy, and use an estimate to check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use place-value disks on mats to model 14.36 + 2.8 and 14.36 − 2.8, then record each written method.

  2. Ask, “Which method is clearer for 3.75 × 2.4, partial products or the standard algorithm, and why?”

  3. Play Decimal Target: draw digit cards, build two decimals, choose an operation, and score when the result falls within a target range.

  4. Give students a grocery receipt and budget; they total selected prices, find change, and divide the cost equally among three people.
