What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a strategy, such as place-value models, expanded form, compensation, or the standard algorithm. They use addition or subtraction to solve decimal problems and explain why their answer makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student lines up decimal points, uses place value correctly, and regroups across tenths and hundredths. They solve story problems, label answers, and check reasonableness with estimation or an inverse operation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may line up the last digits rather than the decimal points. They may treat 4.5 and 4.05 as equal, forget placeholder zeros, or regroup incorrectly. Some subtract numbers in the order given without considering which quantity is greater.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Maya has $10.00 and buys a notebook for $3.68 and a pen for $1.75. How much remains? Show two strategies and an estimate.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs play money to model $8.35 minus $2.78, then record each regrouping in a place-value chart.

  2. Students respond to the prompt, "Why must decimal points line up, and when can adding a zero help?"

  3. Play Decimal Target: students draw digit cards, build two decimals, and add or subtract to get closest to a posted target.

  4. Use a takeout menu to choose two items, find the cost, and calculate change from $20.00.
