What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use pictures, objects, and equations to divide a unit fraction into equal shares or count unit-fraction groups within a whole number. They solve word problems and explain what the quotient means.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students draw accurate fraction bars, number lines, or group models for both division situations. They find the quotient and explain whether they counted unit-fraction groups or shared one unit fraction equally.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat both division orders as the same, even though 4 ÷ 1/3 differs from 1/3 ÷ 4. They may multiply denominators without connecting the calculation to equal groups or sharing.

How to Assess It

Give students 3 ÷ 1/4 and 1/4 ÷ 3. Ask them to draw a model, find each quotient, and explain why the answers differ.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips to model 1/2 ÷ 3 and 3 ÷ 1/2, then label each quotient.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 5 ÷ 1/4 has an answer greater than 5.

  3. Play a matching game with division expressions, visual models, story problems, and quotients on separate cards.

  4. Use recipes to ask how many quarter-cup servings fill 3 cups, then reverse the situation by sharing one quarter cup among three people.
