What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent fraction and mixed-number situations with number lines, fraction bars, or area models. They rename fractions with common denominators, then add or subtract and explain what the answer means.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a useful common denominator and rename each fraction correctly. They use a model or equation to find the answer, simplify it, and check that it fits the problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract denominators instead of renaming fractions as equivalent fractions. They may also forget to regroup one whole when subtracting mixed numbers or misread the model's whole.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A jug holds 3 1/2 liters. After 1 3/4 liters are poured out, how much remains? Draw a model and show your equation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips to build 2/3 + 3/4, rename both fractions, combine them, and record a matching equation.
Ask students to explain why adding denominators fails, using drawings to compare 1/2 + 1/3 with 2/5.
Play a matching game where students pair fraction and mixed-number problems with equivalent forms, visual models, and correct sums or differences.
Plan a class party budget by adding and subtracting fractional pounds of snacks, then justify each answer with a bar model.
