What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pictures, fraction strips, number lines, or repeated addition to combine equal fractional amounts. They write an equation, calculate the product, and connect the answer to the problem situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can solve problems such as 5 groups of 3/4 and show the product with a diagram and an equation. They can simplify the answer, rename it when useful, and explain why the product is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply both the numerator and denominator by the whole number, producing an equivalent fraction instead of a larger amount. They may add the whole number to the fraction or miscount equal groups in a model. Some forget to rename an improper fraction as a mixed number when the context calls for it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A recipe uses 2/3 cup of oats per batch. Show and solve how many cups are needed for 4 batches using a model and an equation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and ask them to build six groups of 2/5, sketch the model, and write the product.
Ask students to explain why 4 times 3/8 is greater than 3/8 but less than 4.
Play a card game where students draw a whole-number card and a fraction card, then model and solve the product.
Use a walking plan of 3/4 mile per day for five days, and have students find and illustrate the total distance.
