Georgia 4.NR.4.6

Math4th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators using a variety of tools.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve real-life problems involving addition, subtraction, equivalence, and comparison of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100 using part-whole strategies and visual models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine and separate fractions or mixed numbers when the parts are the same size. They represent their work with tools such as fraction strips, number lines, drawings, or equations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately solve problems with fractions or mixed numbers that share a denominator. They use fraction strips, number lines, or drawings to show the calculation. They can explain why the denominator stays the same and when a whole must be traded.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract the denominators along with the numerators. They may forget to trade one whole for fractional parts when subtracting mixed numbers. Some leave improper fractions unchanged without checking whether a mixed-number form is expected.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Solve 4 2/5 minus 1 4/5. Draw a fraction model and write one sentence explaining any trade you made.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips to model 2 3/4 minus 1 1/4, then record matching equations and explain each step.

  2. Ask, "Why does the denominator stay the same when adding fourths?" Students write two sentences and sketch a model.

  3. Play Fraction Target: students draw like-denominator cards, add or subtract them, and earn a point for landing closest to three.

  4. Have students find how much ribbon remains from 5 3/8 yards after using 2 6/8 yards, using a number line.
