What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide which fractions are smaller or larger and place up to three in order. They use models, benchmarks, or equivalent fractions to explain how they know.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly order three fractions and justify each comparison. They choose an efficient strategy, such as benchmarks, equivalent fractions, common denominators, fraction strips, or a number line.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a larger denominator means a larger fraction, or compare only the numerators. They may also compare models with different-sized wholes or place fractions incorrectly around benchmarks such as one-half.

How to Assess It

Ask students to order 5/8, 7/10, and 3/4 from least to greatest. Require a number line or benchmark explanation for two comparisons.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips, then have students build and order 2/3, 3/4, and 5/8 on their desks.

  2. Ask, “Which is greater, 5/6 or 7/9?” Students write a claim and defend it using a benchmark or equivalent fractions.

  3. Play Fraction War with three cards per round, and award a point to the player who orders all three correctly.

  4. Compare three recipe amounts, such as 2/3 cup, 3/4 cup, and 5/8 cup, and list them from least to greatest.
