Georgia 4.NR.4.3

Math4th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Compare two fractions with different numerators and/or different denominators by flexibly using a variety of tools and strategies and recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve real-life problems involving addition, subtraction, equivalence, and comparison of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100 using part-whole strategies and visual models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare two fractions using benchmarks, equivalent fractions, number lines, area models, or reasoning about numerators and denominators. They explain the comparison and check that both fractions describe the same-sized whole.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose an efficient strategy, use <, >, or = correctly, and justify the comparison with a model or equation. The student notices when different-sized wholes make a comparison invalid.

Common Misconceptions

Students may compare only numerators or denominators, such as claiming 3/8 is greater than 2/3 because 3 is greater than 2. They may also assume a larger denominator means a larger fraction or compare fractions of different-sized wholes.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Ana shaded 5/8 of one paper strip, and Ben shaded 2/3 of an equal-length strip. Compare the fractions, justify your answer, then explain why equal-length strips matter.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs equal-length fraction strips; have them compare six fraction pairs and record each result with <, >, or =.

  2. Ask, “Is 3/5 always greater than 1/2?” and have students write a claim supported by a drawing.

  3. Prepare cards showing fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100; play Fraction War.

  4. Compare recipe amounts such as 3/4 cup and 2/3 cup, then explain which amount is greater using a benchmark.
