Georgia 4.NR.4.2

Math4th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size and recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve real-life problems involving addition, subtraction, equivalence, and comparison of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100 using part-whole strategies and visual models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide which of two fractions is greater when the fractions share a numerator or denominator. They use models or reasoning about piece size and confirm that both fractions refer to equal-sized wholes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly use <, >, or = to compare fractions that share a numerator or denominator. They explain the comparison using fraction size and check that both fractions describe equal-sized wholes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a larger denominator means a larger fraction, such as 1/8 being greater than 1/4. They may also compare fractions from wholes of different sizes.

How to Assess It

Give students 3/8 and 5/8, then 3/4 and 3/10. Ask them to insert <, >, or = and justify each answer with words or a model.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips for 3/4 and 3/8, then 5/8 and 3/8, and have them align and compare each pair.

  2. Ask students to explain why 2/3 is greater than 2/5 without using cross multiplication.

  3. Play Fraction War with cards sharing numerators or denominators, requiring each winner to justify the comparison before keeping the cards.

  4. Compare portions from two equal-sized pizzas, then show why comparing slices from differently sized pizzas can give a misleading result.
