Georgia 5.NR.3.1

Math5th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Explain the meaning of a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b). Solve problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect a fraction to a division situation, such as sharing 7 pizzas equally among 4 people. They solve whole-number division problems whose quotients are fractions or mixed numbers. They use drawings or models to explain the result.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can represent a sharing problem with an equation and a visual model. The student gives the quotient as a fraction or mixed number and explains what each part represents.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the numerator and denominator, writing 4/7 for 7 shared among 4 people. They may report only the remainder instead of expressing the result as a fraction or mixed number. Some think a fractional answer means the division cannot be completed.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Five friends share 13 granola bars equally. How much does each friend receive? Show a fraction or mixed number and explain your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 7 paper pizzas and 4 plates, then have them divide the pizzas equally and label each share.

  2. Ask students to explain why 9 shared equally among 4 people gives each person 9/4, or 2 1/4.

  3. Play a matching game using whole-number division cards, fraction cards, mixed-number cards, and picture models.

  4. Plan how 11 feet of ribbon can be cut equally for 3 gift baskets, then state each ribbon length.
