Georgia 4.NR.2.2
The Standard
Interpret, model, and solve problems involving multiplicative comparison.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Using part-whole strategies, solve problems involving addition and subtraction through the hundred-thousands place, as well as multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers presented in real-life, mathematical situations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify which quantity is being compared and which quantity is the reference. They draw a model, write an equation, and solve for a missing amount or multiplier.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify the reference quantity, compared quantity, and multiplier in a word problem. They can use a bar model and equation to find any missing value and explain the answer in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat “times as many” as addition instead of multiplication. They may reverse the compared quantity and reference quantity, or choose the wrong operation when a factor is unknown.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A red ribbon is 24 inches long. It is 3 times as long as a blue ribbon. Find the blue ribbon’s length. Draw a labeled bar model and write an equation.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 6 and 24 counters, then have students build equal groups, label both quantities, and write a comparison equation.
Display 5 × 7 = 35 and ask, “What two comparison stories fit this equation, and which quantity is the reference?”
Prepare matching cards with comparison stories, bar models, equations, and answers, then have pairs race to build complete sets.
Use a classroom menu with prices of $3, $6, $12, and $24, and ask students to write and solve price comparisons.
