Georgia 3.GSR.6.2

Math3rd GradeGeometric & Spatial Reasoning

The Standard

Classify, compare, and contrast polygons, with a focus on quadrilaterals, based on properties. Analyze specific 3-dimensional figures to identify and describe quadrilaterals as faces of these figures.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify the attributes of polygons, including parallel segments, perpendicular segments, right angles, and symmetry.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students classify polygons using side lengths, angle types, parallel or perpendicular sides, and symmetry. They compare quadrilaterals using these properties and find quadrilateral faces on solid figures.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place one shape in every category that fits, such as classifying a square as a square, rectangle, rhombus, and parallelogram. They support each choice with side, angle, parallel line, or symmetry evidence. They correctly name and describe quadrilateral faces on solid figures.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a square is not a rectangle or rhombus. They may believe turning a shape changes its name, or confuse faces with edges on a solid figure. They may also identify parallel or perpendicular sides by appearance instead of checking their relationships.

How to Assess It

Show a square, a non-square rectangle, a trapezoid, and a triangular prism. Ask students to classify each flat shape, name two properties, and identify every quadrilateral face on the prism.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build quadrilaterals on geoboards, then mark parallel sides, right angles, and lines of symmetry with colored yarn.

  2. Compare a square and a non-square rhombus, list shared properties, then write one property that distinguishes them.

  3. Play Attribute Bingo by calling clues such as four right angles or two pairs of parallel sides.

  4. Inspect cereal boxes and other packages, then sketch and label each quadrilateral face you find.
