What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify polygons by the number and properties of their sides and angles. They sort shapes into categories, compare categories, and explain when one polygon fits several groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students sort shapes accurately, including placing one shape in more than one category. They compare two polygons using precise facts about side lengths, angles, and parallel or perpendicular sides.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat shape names as exclusive, so they say a square cannot also be a rectangle or rhombus. They may classify by appearance, orientation, or size instead of checking sides, angles, and parallel lines.

How to Assess It

Give students a square, a rhombus, and a trapezoid. Ask them to list every category each shape belongs to and justify each choice with two properties.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs polygon cards and yarn hoops, then have them sort each shape into overlapping groups labeled by properties.

  2. Have students respond to the claim that every square is a rectangle, using evidence about sides and angles.

  3. Play Polygon Guess Who, where students ask yes-or-no questions about parallel sides, equal sides, and angles to identify a hidden shape.

  4. Photograph polygon shapes around the school, then label each image with every category that fits and the properties that prove it.
