Georgia 4.GSR.8.2

Math4th GradeGeometric & Spatial Reasoning

The Standard

Classify, compare, and contrast polygons based on lines of symmetry, the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular line segments, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size and based on side lengths.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify and draw geometric objects, classify polygons based on properties, and solve problems involving area and perimeter of rectangular figures.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine polygons and identify side lengths, angle types, parallel or perpendicular sides, and lines of symmetry. They use those features to sort shapes and explain similarities and differences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a mixed set of polygons, students sort them correctly and explain each choice using side, angle, line, and symmetry properties. They recognize that one shape can fit more than one polygon group.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a turned shape changes its name or that a square is not a rectangle. They may confuse parallel sides with equal sides, or count a diagonal as a symmetry line without checking the fold.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Show a square and a non-square rectangle. Students list their shared properties, one difference, and every line of symmetry.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of students craft sticks and angle tiles to build polygons, then record equal sides, right angles, parallel sides, and symmetry.

  2. Display a square and ask, “Which polygon names fit it, and what visible properties prove each name?”

  3. Play polygon clue bingo: call properties such as one line of symmetry or no right angles, and students cover matching shape cards.

  4. Have students inspect floor tiles, signs, and tabletops, sketch one polygon, and label its parallel sides, right angles, and symmetry lines.
