Expectations in This Standard
4.GSR.8 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 4.GSR.8.1
Explore, investigate, and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and lines of symmetry. Id...
- 4.GSR.8.2
Classify, compare, and contrast polygons based on lines of symmetry, the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular line segments, or the presence or abse...
- 4.GSR.8.3
Solve problems involving area and perimeter of composite rectangles involving whole numbers with known side lengths.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify, name, and draw points, lines, rays, segments, angles, and polygons. They sort polygons by properties and find missing lengths, area, or perimeter in rectangular figures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately draw and label geometric objects using a ruler or protractor when needed. They classify polygons from stated properties and solve rectangular area and perimeter problems with correct units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse lines, rays, and line segments, or classify a square as not being a rectangle. They may mix up area and perimeter or use the wrong units.
How to Assess It
- Give students an exit ticket: draw a ray and a right angle, classify a given quadrilateral in all possible ways, then find a 6-by-4 rectangle’s area and perimeter.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs straws and craft sticks to build lines, rays, angles, and polygons, then label each object and list its properties.
Ask students to explain in writing why every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square.
Play polygon sorting bingo using cards that show shapes, side lengths, angle types, parallel sides, area, or perimeter clues.
Measure a classroom tabletop, then calculate how much border trim and covering material would be needed using perimeter and area.
