The Standard

Identify perpendicular line segments, parallel line segments, and right angles, identify these in polygons, and solve problems involving parallel line segments, perpendicular line segments, and right angles.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify the attributes of polygons, including parallel segments, perpendicular segments, right angles, and symmetry.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students inspect shapes and decide which sides never meet, which sides meet at square corners, and where right angles appear. They use these features to describe polygons and solve shape problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and right angles in polygons shown in any position. They can explain each choice using square corners and whether lines would ever meet.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think parallel sides must be the same length or must run horizontally. They may call any intersecting sides perpendicular or miss right angles when a shape is rotated.

How to Assess It

On grid paper, draw a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides and two right angles. Label the parallel sides, right angles, and one perpendicular pair.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build polygons with craft sticks, then use a paper square corner to test and label parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and right angles.

  2. Show a rotated rectangle and ask, "How can you prove its sides are still parallel or perpendicular?"

  3. Play polygon feature bingo using cards labeled with clues such as two parallel sides, four right angles, or one perpendicular pair.

  4. Walk around the classroom and sketch objects that show parallel edges, perpendicular edges, and right angles, such as tiles, doors, and shelves.
