Georgia 4.GSR.8.1
The Standard
Explore, investigate, and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and lines of symmetry. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify and draw geometric objects, classify polygons based on properties, and solve problems involving area and perimeter of rectangular figures.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and draw points, lines, segments, rays, and different angle types. They recognize parallel and perpendicular lines and find lines of symmetry in flat figures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name geometric objects from their markings and relationships. They draw clear examples, classify angles by size, and verify symmetry by matching the two halves.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse a line, segment, and ray because they overlook endpoints and arrows. They may call every narrow angle acute or assume parallel lines must be horizontal. They may also draw a symmetry line that does not create matching halves.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw and label a line, segment, ray, acute angle, obtuse angle, parallel pair, perpendicular pair, and a figure with one line of symmetry.

Ways to Teach It
Use straws, string, and dot stickers to build and label a point, line, segment, ray, three angle types, and intersecting line pairs.
Show a classroom photo and ask, “Which edges represent parallel or perpendicular lines, and where do you see each angle type?”
Play geometry bingo using cards with drawings and clues for points, lines, segments, rays, angles, and symmetry.
Have students photograph or sketch a local sign, window, or court, then mark its lines, angles, and possible lines of symmetry.
