What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify flat shapes and solid figures in different sizes and positions. They sort and classify shapes by visible features. They compare shapes using words about sides, corners, curves, faces, and points.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify and sort common flat shapes and solid figures, even when they are turned or resized. They compare them using features such as sides, corners, flat faces, curves, and points.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a turned square a diamond or think its shape has changed. They may sort by color or size instead of shape attributes. They may confuse flat shapes with solid figures, such as calling a sphere a circle.
How to Assess It
- Give students cards showing a triangle, rectangle, circle, cube, cone, and sphere in varied sizes and positions. Ask them to sort the cards, explain their rule, and compare two cards.

Ways to Teach It
Place classroom objects in a basket, then have students sort them into hoops by shape and explain each choice.
Show two shapes and ask, "What is the same, and what is different?" Record students' words on a class chart.
Play Shape Detective by giving clues such as, "I have three sides and three corners," while students hold up matching cards.
Take a classroom shape walk and photograph objects that resemble circles, rectangles, cubes, cones, spheres, or cylinders.
