Georgia 2.MDR.5.1
The Standard
Construct simple measuring instruments using unit models. Compare unit models to rulers.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Estimate and measure the lengths of objects and distance to solve problems found in real-life using standard units of measurement, including inches, feet, and yards and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place equal-length units end to end to make a simple measuring tool. They compare its spaces and marks with those on a standard ruler.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build a tool with equal units placed end to end and mark each unit boundary. They align an object at zero and explain how their tool matches a ruler.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps, overlap units, or use units of different lengths. They may count ruler marks instead of spaces or begin measuring at 1 instead of 0.
How to Assess It
- Give each student six inch tiles, a cardstock strip, and a pencil. Ask them to build a measuring tool, measure the pencil, then check with a ruler.

Ways to Teach It
Have students line up centimeter cubes on cardstock, mark each boundary, remove the cubes, and use the strip to measure classroom objects.
Show two homemade rulers with different spacing and ask, "Which tool will measure accurately, and what must be fixed?"
Play Tool Inspector by having pairs find and correct gaps, overlaps, missing zero points, or uneven units on sample measuring strips.
Measure pencils for a supply order using a homemade tool, then check each result with a classroom ruler.
