Georgia 1.MDR.6.1
The Standard
Estimate, measure, and record lengths of objects using non-standard units, and compare and order up to three objects using the recorded measurements. Describe the objects compared.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Use appropriate tools to measure, order, and compare intervals of length and time, as well as denominations of money to solve real-life, mathematical problems and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a reasonable guess about an object's length, then check it with equal-sized units such as cubes or paper clips. They record results and use the numbers to order three objects. They describe each object with comparison words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students line up equal-sized units with no gaps or overlaps and record the total correctly. They place three objects in order and explain comparisons using longer, shorter, longest, and shortest.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps, overlap units, or start measuring away from an object's end. They may switch unit sizes, count endpoints instead of units, or think a larger number always means longer.
How to Assess It
- Give each student three pencils, connecting cubes, and a recording sheet. Ask them to estimate, measure, record, order the pencils, and write one comparison sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs connecting cubes and three classroom objects; students estimate, measure end to end, record results, then arrange objects from shortest to longest.
Display two measured objects and ask, "How do the numbers prove which is longer?" Students answer aloud or write one sentence.
Play Measure and Order: teams draw three object cards, measure each with paper clips, and earn a point for correct ordering.
Students measure three books with craft sticks, then decide which book would fit best on a small shelf.
