Georgia 2.MDR.5.2
The Standard
Estimate and measure the length of an object or distance to the nearest whole unit using appropriate units and standard measuring tools.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Estimate and measure the lengths of objects and distance to solve problems found in real-life using standard units of measurement, including inches, feet, and yards and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which length unit and measuring tool fit an object or distance. They estimate first, then measure carefully and report the nearest whole unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a sensible unit and tool for the object or distance. They make a reasonable estimate, measure from the zero mark, and report the result as a whole unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start measuring at the ruler’s edge instead of the zero mark. They may choose units that are too large or small, count tick marks incorrectly, or record fractions instead of the nearest whole unit.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a paper strip and a centimeter ruler. Ask students to estimate its length, measure from zero, and record the nearest whole centimeter.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers, meter sticks, and tape measures, then have them estimate and measure five classroom objects.
Have students explain whether inches or feet better fit measuring the hallway, then defend a reasonable estimate.
Play Measure and Match by pairing object cards with estimate cards, then measuring each object to check the match.
Plan desk placement by estimating and measuring walking distances between the door, tables, and supply shelf.
