Georgia 2.MDR.5.3

Math2nd GradeMeasurement & Data Reasoning

The Standard

Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another and express the length difference in terms of a standard-length unit.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Estimate and measure the lengths of objects and distance to solve problems found in real-life using standard units of measurement, including inches, feet, and yards and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students measure two objects using the same standard unit. They compare the measurements and state how much longer one object is, including the unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students align each object with zero, measure accurately, and record both lengths in the same unit. They subtract the shorter length from the longer length or count on, then label the difference with the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may start each object at a different ruler mark or mix inches and centimeters. They may report the longer object's full length instead of the difference, or subtract the longer length from the shorter one.

How to Assess It

Give each student a 14-centimeter strip and a 9-centimeter strip. Ask, “How much longer is the longer strip? Show your measurement or equation and label the unit.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs two classroom objects, centimeter rulers, and a recording sheet to measure each object and find the length difference.

  2. Ask, “Mia's ribbon is 18 inches and Jay's is 11 inches. How much longer is Mia's, and how do you know?”

  3. Play Compare and Score: students draw two length cards, find the difference, and earn a point for a correct unit-labeled answer.

  4. Tell students a 12-inch shelf must match an 8-inch shelf, then ask how much wood must be added to the shorter shelf.
