Expectations in This Standard
1.NR.5 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 1.NR.5.1
Use a variety of strategies to solve applicable, mathematical addition and subtraction problems with one- and two-digit whole numbers.
- 1.NR.5.2
Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used.
- 1.NR.5.3
Add and subtract multiples of 10 within 100.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use base ten blocks, drawings, and place value to add and subtract numbers within 100. They compose or break apart tens and ones and use strategies such as making a ten.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately add and subtract two digit numbers using blocks, drawings, or equations. They trade between tens and ones correctly and explain how place value supports each step.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine tens and ones without keeping place values separate. They may subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit in each column or forget to trade one ten for ten ones.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “Solve 46 + 27 and 72 minus 38. Show each answer with a base ten drawing and an equation.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base ten blocks to model 34 + 28 and 62 minus 27, trading between tens and ones as needed.
Have students draw 43 + 25 and write why tens combine with tens and ones combine with ones.
Play a partner card game where students draw two two digit numbers, add them, and earn a point for a correct model.
Set up a classroom store with prices under 100 cents, then have students find totals and change using play coins.
