The Standard
Compare and order whole numbers up to 100 using concrete models, drawings, and the symbols >, =, and <.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Extend the count sequence to 120. Read, write, and represent numerical values to 120 and compare numerical values to 100.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which of two numbers has greater, lesser, or equal value. They use tens and ones, drawings, and comparison signs, then arrange groups of numbers by value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can model two numbers with tens and ones, choose the correct comparison sign, and explain the choice. The student can also arrange several numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read the comparison sign backward or think it always points to the greater number. They may compare only the ones digits, so they call 47 greater than 52. Some also place numbers in the order they were given instead of by value.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw tens and ones for 47 and 52, write the correct comparison sign, then order 36, 63, and 39 from least to greatest.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks and number cards, then have students build each number and place the correct comparison sign between them.
Show 46 and 64, then ask students to write how the tens and ones prove which number is greater.
Play Number Line-Up by giving each student a number card and asking groups to arrange themselves from least to greatest.
Post two classroom supply counts, such as 38 crayons and 53 pencils, and have students compare the amounts with a drawing and sign.
