What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each digit in a decimal to its place value through thousandths. They use that place value to represent, compare, and arrange decimals, then record comparisons with the correct symbol.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a decimal, the student can show it on a place-value chart and write it in expanded form. The student can accurately order several decimals and justify each comparison by naming the first place where the digits differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a decimal with more digits is always greater, so they claim 0.425 is greater than 0.5. They may ignore placeholder zeros or compare digits without matching place values. Some students also reverse the meaning of < and >.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Place 0.507, 0.57, and 0.075 in least-to-greatest order, then complete 0.507 __ 0.57 and explain using place value.

Ways to Teach It
Build decimals on a place-value mat with digit cards, then swap mats with a partner and compare the two numbers.
Ask, “Which is greater, 0.4 or 0.399, and why?” Students write a place-value explanation, then discuss.
Play Decimal War with decimal cards; partners compare cards, state the correct symbol, and keep both after giving a correct explanation.
Compare three runners’ race times measured to thousandths, then rank the finishes and explain why the lowest time wins.
