What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide which of two decimals is greater or whether they are equal. They use place value, models, or equivalent forms such as 0.6 and 0.60 to support their answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly compare decimals such as 0.47 and 0.5, including decimals with different numbers of digits. They use place value, equivalent decimals, or models to explain each choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think 0.8 is less than 0.75 because 8 is less than 75. They may also think more decimal digits mean a larger number, or miss that 0.5 equals 0.50.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Compare 0.6 and 0.58 using a symbol, then justify your answer with hundredths or a decimal model.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs decimal cards and hundred grids, then have students shade each value, compare the models, and place the correct symbol between them.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 0.7 is greater than 0.67, using the words tenths and hundredths.

  3. Play Decimal War with card pairs, where partners compare two decimals, state the correct symbol, and explain before keeping the cards.

  4. Display prices such as $4.07 and $4.70, then ask students which costs more and how place value proves it.
