Georgia 4.NR.1.3
The Standard
Use place value reasoning to represent, compare, and order multi-digit numbers, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Recognize patterns within the base ten place value system with quantities presented in real-life situations to compare and round multi-digit whole numbers through the hundred-thousands place and compare decimal numbers to the hundredths place.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show multi-digit numbers in standard, word, expanded, or place-value form. They compare numbers from left to right and use <, >, or = to record comparisons. They also arrange several numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write the same number correctly in standard, word, expanded, and place-value forms. They compare from the greatest place, use the correct symbol, and order several numbers accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare digits in the ones place first instead of starting at the greatest place. They may reverse < and >, ignore placeholder zeros, or think a longer-looking expanded form means a greater number.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write 307,418 in expanded form, complete 307,418 __ 307,481, then order 307,410, 307,481, and 307,418 from least to greatest.

Ways to Teach It
Give students digit cards and a place-value mat, then have partners build, compare, and order three teacher-called numbers.
Ask, “Which is greater, 406,205 or 406,250?” Students write an explanation naming the first place where the digits differ.
Play Number Battle by having students draw six digit cards, build the greatest possible number, and compare numbers with a partner.
Provide attendance figures for four local events, then have students order them and write two comparison statements using symbols.
