What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use illustrations, read-aloud details, and simple background facts to figure out where and when a text takes place. They apply those details when drawing, speaking, or writing their own texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify where and when a text may take place and point to supporting clues. The student can include matching details in a drawing, sentence, or oral story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every text happens in their own place and time. They may guess from one picture detail or confuse a character’s clothing with the story’s location.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture book page with clear setting clues. Ask, “Where and when might this happen? Point to two clues, then add one matching detail to your own drawing.”

Ways to Teach It
Sort picture cards of beaches, farms, cities, and snowy towns, then place character and object cards in settings where they fit.
After a read-aloud, ask, “What details tell us where and when this story happens?” Record student evidence on a class chart.
Play Context Clue Detective by revealing a book cover, illustration, and sentence one at a time while students revise their setting guesses.
Compare a current classroom photo with an older school photo, then name details showing how school life changes across time and place.
