What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students think about what they already know before reading, viewing, or discussing a topic. They ask questions, check a simple source, and talk with classmates. They choose background details that help the topic make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a book cover or topic, students name something useful they already know. They find one new fact from a picture, read-aloud, or classmate and explain how it helps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may share any personal connection, even when it does not help with the topic. They may treat a guess as a fact or repeat story events instead of giving useful background information.
How to Assess It
- Show a book cover about migrating geese. Ask students to choose the helpful fact from three choices and explain why it will help them understand the book.

Ways to Teach It
Place a pinecone, leaf, and animal track photo in a bag; students sort which clues would help before reading a forest story.
Before a farm book, ask, "What do we know about farms, and which ideas might help us understand this story?"
Play Relevant or Not: read a topic and fact cards, then students hold up thumbs to show which facts belong.
Before a cafeteria visit, list what students know about cafeteria workers and choose facts that explain their jobs.
