What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use what they know, a simple source, and partner talk to find background details that help explain a text or topic. They choose useful details and leave out unrelated facts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a text or topic, the student selects useful details about the people, place, time, or situation. The student explains why each detail helps and revises ideas after reading or talking with a partner.

Common Misconceptions

Some students list every fact they know instead of choosing details that clarify the text or topic. Others copy source facts without checking relevance or mistake a plot event for useful background.

How to Assess It

Show a photo and short paragraph about a child attending school 100 years ago. Ask students to name two background details that explain the child’s school day and tell why each matters.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a story page, photo, map, and fact cards, then have them sort details into “helps us understand” and “extra.”

  2. Ask, “Which details about the setting or time period explain the character’s choice?” Partners discuss, then write one supported answer.

  3. Play Context Detective by revealing three background clues, then awarding a point when teams identify and explain the most useful clue.

  4. Before a school event, students read the flyer, ask a classmate questions, and list the details families need to participate.
