What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use what they know, brief research, and peer discussion to find background information that helps explain a text. They choose relevant context and connect it to specific details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can select historical, cultural, author, audience, or situational details that clarify a specific text. They can explain the connection and confirm uncertain information through research or discussion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list every background fact instead of choosing facts that affect meaning. They may trust inaccurate prior knowledge, confuse setting with context, or assume every detail about the author matters.

How to Assess It

Give students a short excerpt and four background facts. Ask them to choose the two most relevant facts and explain how each affects their reading.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a short speech and context cards, then have them sort each card into relevant, possibly relevant, or unrelated.

  2. Ask, "Which background fact changes your reading most, and what specific word, claim, or detail does it help explain?"

  3. Play Context Match: teams pair excerpts with research notes and earn a point only when they explain the connection.

  4. Compare two news posts about the same event, then identify how audience, timing, location, and prior events shape each post.
