What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather background information from what they know, a brief source check, and classmates. They select the details that best explain a text’s meaning, purpose, or choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify details about the author, audience, time, place, culture, or events that clarify a text. They explain the link between each selected detail and specific words, ideas, or choices in the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat context as only the story’s setting. They may collect every fact about an author or era without deciding which facts clarify the text. They may also present assumptions as facts without checking a source.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and five background facts. Ask them to choose the two most relevant facts and explain how each one helps readers understand the passage.

Ways to Teach It
In groups, sort background fact cards into relevant, possibly relevant, and irrelevant piles, then connect each chosen card to a line.
Discuss which fact about an author’s time, place, or audience most changes a passage, then defend the choice in three sentences.
Play Context Match: teams pair passages with background facts and score only when they explain how each fact clarifies meaning.
Compare two news reports about the same event, then identify how date, audience, and location explain their different details.
