What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice who made a text, who it is for, and the situation around it. They explain how those clues affect words, pictures, and audience reactions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify the likely audience for a simple book, sign, card, or message. They can point to words or pictures chosen for that audience and describe a likely response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every text is meant for everyone or that pictures are only decoration. They may name a feeling without pointing to a word, picture, speaker, place, or purpose that caused it.

How to Assess It

Show a birthday invitation and a playground rule sign. Ask, “Who is each for, what choice did the maker make, and how might that group respond?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards showing a birthday invitation, warning sign, and bedtime story, then have them match each text to an audience card.

  2. Read two versions of a message, one for a friend and one for the principal, then ask what changed and why.

  3. Play Audience Switch: name a message and a new listener, then students choose words or pictures that fit.

  4. Create class signs for younger students, then invite a pre-K group to react and suggest clearer words or pictures.
