What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use clues about place, time, traditions, and events to make sense of a story or informational text. They add fitting details when speaking, drawing, or writing their own text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to a picture or sentence and explain what it reveals about where and when a text happens. The student uses those clues to explain a character’s actions or add fitting details to a new page.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every story as if it happens in their own time and community. They may name the setting but not connect it to characters, events, word choices, or their own writing.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture book page with clear setting clues. Ask, “Where and when might this happen, and what two details helped you decide?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards from different places and times, then have them sort the cards and explain each choice.
Read a story page and ask, “How would the character act differently if this happened in our town today?”
Play Context Detective by revealing one picture or sentence clue at a time while students guess the place, time, or event.
Compare a school photograph from long ago with one from today, then list details that show how school life has changed.
