What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a short word or sentence, hold it in mind, and write it so the message stays the same. They form letters clearly, leave spaces, and work at a steady pace.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can hear a simple sentence and write it without losing or changing words. Letters are recognizable, words are separated, and the student needs few repetitions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write only the first sounds they hear or leave out words while concentrating on letter formation. Some rush and form unclear letters, reverse letters, or forget spaces between words.
How to Assess It
- Say, “The cat can hop.” Repeat it once, then ask students to write it from memory. Check for all five words, readable letters, and spaces.

Ways to Teach It
Say a four-word sentence, have students build it with word cards, then cover the cards and write the sentence on paper.
Ask, “What helps you remember every word while writing?” Record strategies, then let students test one with a short dictated sentence.
Play Sentence Echo: say a short sentence, students repeat it, tap once per word, then write it before checking a model.
Have students listen to a class snack request, then write the request as a note for the cafeteria helper.
