What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write uppercase and lowercase letters with recognizable shapes, clear starting points, and consistent direction. They practice the letters in their own names with growing ease and control.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student forms the letters in their first and last name so another person can identify them. The student uses taught stroke patterns and writes with fewer pauses over time.
Common Misconceptions
- Children may reverse letters, start strokes from the bottom, or add extra lines. They may mix uppercase and lowercase letters or treat letter size and line placement as unimportant.
How to Assess It
- Give each child a card showing their first and last name. Ask them to copy both names, then check letter shape, stroke direction, size, and control.

Ways to Teach It
Build name letters with play dough, then trace each with a finger and write it beside the model.
Ask, “Which letter in your name is hardest to form?” Have children draw its strokes and explain where they start.
Play Name Letter Bingo: call a letter, and children cover it on name cards only after writing it once.
Set up a sign-in sheet where children write their first or last name when entering a classroom center.
