Students can write uppercase and lowercase cursive letters from memory. They can produce a short, readable passage with smooth connections, steady spacing, and consistent letter size.

Common Misconceptions

Students may print some letters within cursive words or lift the pencil between every letter. They may also use uneven letter size, crowded spacing, or incorrect starting points that make writing hard to read.

How to Assess It

Ask students to write, “Bright stars shine above the quiet field,” in cursive. Check letter formation, connections, spacing, size, and readability.

   Form cursive letters with modeling clay, then write the same letters on lined paper using the correct starting points.
