What Students Need to Do

Students control a pencil to make clear uppercase and lowercase letters. They write words with consistent size, direction, line placement, and spacing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write a short sentence that another person can read easily. Letters face the correct direction, sit on the line, and have clear spaces between words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse letters such as b and d, mix uppercase and lowercase letters, or leave uneven spaces. Some press too hard, rush, or use an awkward grip that makes writing tiring.

How to Assess It

Ask students to copy, “The quick brown fox jumps,” then write, “I like to play outside.” Check letter shape, size, spacing, and readability.

   Have students roll clay into lines and curves, then build lowercase letters from a teacher model before writing them with pencils.

   Ask students to compare two handwritten sentences and explain which is easier to read, using letter shape, spacing, and line placement.

   Play Handwriting Relay, where partners draw a word card, write it neatly, and earn a point when another pair reads it correctly.
