What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students control a pencil to make clear uppercase and lowercase letters. They place letters on lines and leave enough space between letters and words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form recognizable uppercase and lowercase letters with controlled pencil strokes. They write short words and sentences that another person can read without help.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start letters at the bottom, reverse letters such as b and d, or use uneven sizes. They may crowd words together, leave large gaps, or let letters float above or below the lines.
How to Assess It
- Give students lined paper and say, “Write your name and the sentence, ‘I see a red cat.’” Check letter shape, size, spacing, and line placement.

Ways to Teach It
Build lowercase letters with clay, then trace each letter with a finger and write it twice on lined paper.
Compare two handwritten labels and answer, “Which is easier to read, and what makes it clearer?”
Draw a letter card, write it three times neatly, then earn a point if a partner can name it.
Make name tags for classroom supplies, checking letter shape, line placement, and spacing before taping them in place.
