What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use controlled hand movements to form legible cursive letters. They connect letters into words and write sentences with clear spacing and consistent placement on the line.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form uppercase and lowercase letters with consistent size, slant, and placement. They connect letters smoothly and write a short sentence that another person can read easily.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat cursive as print letters joined by extra lines. They may reverse letters, crowd words, float letters above the baseline, or use incorrect starting points.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write three connected words and one sentence in cursive: "Bright stars shine tonight." Check letter formation, connections, spacing, and line placement.

Ways to Teach It
Have students trace cursive letters in sand, then write the same letters on lined paper using correct starting points.
Ask students to write which cursive letters feel easiest and hardest, then explain what makes each one challenging.
Play cursive word relay by having teams correctly write one connected word at a time from a prepared list.
Students write a short cursive thank-you note, address an envelope, and trade with a partner to check readability. From the list, they write the word in cursive.
