What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students form recognizable cursive letters with correct starting points, stroke direction, and size. They connect letters into readable words and leave clear spaces between words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can copy and independently write a short sentence in cursive that another person can read without help. Letter shapes, joins, spacing, and placement on the line stay mostly consistent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may form cursive letters like print letters, use the wrong starting point, or add loops where none belong. They may connect every stroke, crowd words together, or sacrifice readability for speed.
How to Assess It
- On lined paper, have students copy, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” in cursive. Check letter formation, joins, spacing, and readability.

Ways to Teach It
Have students trace large cursive letters in sand, then write the same letters with pencil on lined paper.
Show two cursive samples and ask, “Which is easier to read, and what do the joins, size, and spacing show you?”
Play Cursive Card Draw: students pick a letter card, write that letter, then connect it to a second drawn letter.
Have students write a short thank-you note in cursive, address it to a school staff member, and deliver it.
