What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use controlled pencil movements to write readable uppercase and lowercase letters. They keep letter shapes, sizes, spacing, and placement consistent while writing words and sentences at a steady pace.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes readable letters with consistent size, shape, spacing, and placement on the line. The student forms letters smoothly and writes a short sentence without frequent pauses or corrections.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse b and d, mix letter sizes, or start strokes in inefficient places. They may also crowd words, leave uneven spaces, or sacrifice legibility when writing quickly.

How to Assess It

Give students one dictated sentence containing a mix of tall, short, and descending letters. Check letter shape, size, spacing, alignment, and writing pace.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build letters with clay, then write each letter three times on lined paper using the same stroke path.

  2. Ask students to compare two handwriting samples and write one sentence explaining which is easier to read and why.

  3. Play Letter Formation Relay, where students draw a card and neatly write its uppercase letter, lowercase letter, and a matching word.

  4. Students write a clear classroom label or supply request that another student must read and follow without asking questions.
