What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students leave clear, consistent spaces between words when writing in cursive. They keep letters within each word connected or grouped without adding spaces inside the word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a short cursive paragraph with clear, even spaces between words. Readers can quickly tell where each word begins and ends across every line.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave no space between words, add spaces inside a word, or use gaps that vary widely. They may also crowd words near the right margin instead of moving the whole word to the next line.
How to Assess It
- Give students two sentences to copy in cursive. Check that each space clearly separates words, no word is split by a gap, and spacing stays consistent.

Ways to Teach It
Have students copy a sentence in cursive, placing a craft stick after each word to keep the spaces even.
Show two cursive samples and ask, “Which is easier to read, and how does the spacing help?”
Play spacing detective by having pairs circle missing spaces and mark extra spaces in prepared cursive sentences.
Students write a cursive lunch order or thank-you note, then ask a partner to read it without help.
