What Students Need to Do

Students listen to a short spoken message, hold it in mind, and write it without losing or changing the meaning. They form letters and words quickly, accurately, and clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can hear a short sentence, remember it, and write the complete message in the correct order. The handwriting is readable, with accurate letters, spaces, capitals, and punctuation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may remember the main idea but leave out small words or change word order. They may write so quickly that letters, spacing, capitals, or punctuation become unclear.

How to Assess It

Say, “The small frog jumped into the cool pond,” twice. Have students write it from memory, then check word order, meaning, letter formation, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.

   Say a six-word sentence, have pairs build it with word cards, then hide the cards and write the sentence by hand.

   Read two sentences with one word changed, then ask students to explain the meaning change and write the sentence they heard.

   Play Sentence Echo by reading a short sentence once and awarding points for complete words, correct order, spacing, and punctuation.

4. 04

   Have partners state a simple lunch order while the listener records it clearly on a paper order form.
