What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to spoken words and sentences, hold them in memory, and write them in the same order. They form letters quickly and clearly while keeping spelling, spacing, capitals, punctuation, and meaning intact.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student hears a grade-level sentence and writes the words in the correct order at a steady pace. Letters are legible, spaces are clear, and capitals and punctuation are accurate. The student rereads the sentence and confirms that it keeps the spoken meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may hold only the first few words in mind, then omit or reorder the rest. Some write too quickly and lose letter formation, spacing, capitals, or punctuation. Others copy one letter at a time instead of remembering meaningful word groups.
How to Assess It
- Dictate, “My little dog ran after the red ball.” Have students write it once, then check word order, spelling, spacing, capitalization, punctuation, and legibility.

Ways to Teach It
Build a sentence with word cards, read it aloud, cover the cards, write it from memory, then uncover and check.
Ask students to write one strategy they use to remember a whole spoken sentence while forming letters clearly.
Play Dictation Detective by reading short sentences while students write them, compare with the original, and circle any changes.
Read a short classroom announcement aloud, then have students write it clearly for a partner who was absent.
