What Students Need to Do

Students listen to a short spoken sentence, hold the words in memory, and write them in order. They form readable letters and words without losing the sentence’s meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

After hearing a short sentence, a student writes all words in the correct order at a steady pace. Letters are readable, spaces are clear, and the meaning stays intact.

Common Misconceptions

Students may remember the main idea but omit, add, or reorder words. They may pause over each letter, reverse letters, or leave unclear spaces that change meaning.

How to Assess It

Say, “The red hen can run,” then repeat it once. Give students one minute to write it, then check word order, letter formation, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.

   Give students five counters, dictate a five-word sentence, have them slide one counter per remembered word, then write it on whiteboards.

   Ask, “What can you do when you forget part of a sentence while writing?” and list useful memory strategies together.

   Play Sentence Relay, where partners take turns hearing, repeating, and writing short sentences, earning a point for accuracy and readability.

   Dictate a simple lunch order, such as “I want milk and apples,” and have students write it as a cafeteria note.
