Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students join classmates in reading a well-known poem, chant, or patterned book aloud. They keep a steady talking pace and use a clear classroom voice.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student starts with the group, follows each printed word, and stays with classmates through the final line. The voice is audible but not shouted, and the phrasing shows the text makes sense.
Common Misconceptions: Some children think fluent group reading means racing or shouting. Others recite from memory without looking at the words, causing them to lose their place.
How to Assess It: Display a familiar four-line rhyme and have groups of four read it twice. Check for starting together, staying with the group, clear volume, and steady rate.

Lesson moves

Students sort picture cards showing whisper, classroom, and shout voices, then use the classroom card while rereading a familiar rhyme.
Ask, "What happens to the meaning when our group reads too fast or too quietly?" then test both versions with one line.
Play conductor by pointing to pace and volume icons while the class reads a known chant, then let students take turns conducting.
Rehearse a familiar welcome poem as a class, then perform it clearly for another kindergarten class or visiting family members.
