What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read stories, poems, and informational passages aloud in meaningful phrases. They adjust pauses, expression, and voice to match punctuation and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads practiced and unfamiliar passages smoothly, with words grouped into meaningful phrases. The student uses punctuation, dialogue, and meaning to guide pauses and tone.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think fluent reading means reading as fast as possible. Others pause after every word or line, ignore punctuation, or use expression that does not fit the meaning.

How to Assess It

Give each student a 60-word grade-level passage to read aloud. Mark whether the student groups words, pauses at punctuation, changes tone, and explains the passage.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students sentence strips, have them mark phrase breaks with slashes, then read each sentence aloud using those planned pauses.

  2. Read one sentence in two different tones, then ask, “Which reading fits the character or event, and what clues helped you decide?”

  3. Play Punctuation Conductor, where one student points to punctuation cards and a partner reads with the matching pause or voice change.

  4. Have students rehearse and deliver a short weather report, using pauses and tone to make the information clear to listeners.
